Presidential candidate Max Gordy released a statement on Dec. 15 regarding the scandal concerning his famous Gordy’s Gusto barbeque sauce recipe that recently came to light.

Gordy’s heartfelt response to the scandal explained that growing up in a poor family, he acquired a job at Applebee’s to help his mom with the bills. When he created his own recipe, he unknowingly used the same key ingredients as the Applebee’s sauce because he had grown so familiar with the taste after working there for several years and eating their food almost every day,

“It is true that my sauce held certain similarities to the Applebee’s sauce, but not because I stole the recipe, because I was a victim of unconscious plagiarism,” Gordy wrote in his statement.

Though he acknowledged his mistake, instead of closing his business altogether, Gordy has decided to hand over his company to Applebee’s to ensure that his employees are not out of work. He has also decided to donate all his profits to a variety of charities, such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the American Red Cross, and Doctors Without Borders USA.

Throughout the campaign, Gordy has appealed to the people as the “common man” candidate, and his explanation for this scandal may have helped to further that reputation. Giving Gordy a chance to explain his backstory launched his humble roots into the spotlight, and his response demonstrates his consideration for the working class. These actions validate his campaign's focus on helping the lower and middle classes, as he mentioned in his previous campaign speech.

“The nation cannot stuff the few who are rich while starving the few who are poor,” Gordy said in his speech.

Stressing that he feels remorse for his actions and wants to be as honest as possible from this point forward, Gordy ended his statement with an earnest apology and a reminder of what his campaign continues to be focused on.

“I am a human. I made a mistake. I am not going to deny it. I am going to embrace it and do what I can to make up for it,” Gordy said. “We must learn from the past so we can build in the present and prosper in the future.”
