On Dec. 19, candidate Max Gordy took to the podium to make an unprecedented announcement:
“After careful deliberation of the lack of female representation in this campaign, I have decided to make Alexa Crist my vice president,” Gordy said. “Thank you very much.”
Gordy is the first candidate to have a clear running mate, but more notably, his choice puts Crist in the spotlight as the first--and sole--female candidate in this election.
“I think that if you look at the campaigns there is a lot of people who are in the more classic male dominant politician role, and I think that that’s something that’s been a part of politics for a long time,” Gordy elaborated in an interview with The Walking Nine.“It’s a reality that I would like to change.”
When Gordy spoke to the period 7 electorate on the afternoon if Dec. 21, he did so with Crist at his side, and openly criticized the FEC's choice to not select a female candidate.
"I think it was a mistake," Gordy said.
While Gordy cites the lack of female representation as a factor behind choosing Crist as his vice president, he later stressed that this was not the sole reason behind his choice.
“She’s completely competent in everything I’ve asked her to do and everything that I haven’t had to ask her to do,” Gordy said. “She’s my most trusted adviser in my campaign.”
When asked about her feelings on being chosen as vice president, Crist responded that she was pleased with the nomination.
“It’s a really important responsibility, and I’m glad that he trusted me with [it]," Crist said. "I definitely trust him, so I think we’re a pretty good pair."
