Candidate Konstantin Belikow's campaign released and circulated a press release on Dec. 15 responding to a scandal surrounding Belikow's connections with the Russian government, suspicious which arose after he accidentally copied members of the entire institution into an email about dinner plans to his wife.
Konstantin opened the statement by labeling the claims as "silly" and “outrageous”, and that the evidence “may have been misinterpreted.”
In his letter, Belikow confirms that he has been in constant contact with them. However, though many have seen his connections as a potential threat to the safety of our nation, he claims he maintains these connections “in attempt to gauge their opinions on U.S.-Russia relations.”
The sentence that he was overheard murmuring to a Russian official (which, containing words such as "tamper" and "Russia's best interests", held sinister connotations), was in regards to warning the government about preventing tampering in upcoming Russian presidential elections, Belikow claims.
Belikow assures his supporters that his relationship with Putin is purely professional and that the Russian government is supportive of his campaign.
Additionally, Belikow promises that he will be more open with the public in the future.
“In the interest of transparency, I will refrain from withholding this type of information in the future,” Belikow said.
